Software integrations used to be costly to build and maintain. They were a luxury reserved for the largest corporations. With the rise of MCP servers, you can have a perfectly sound integration for almost free, if you are willing to spend some AI tokens to run it (MCP + skills).

Don't want to spend money on tokens? Fine, have Chat GPT build you a tkinter app to move data between two systems. While you are at it, build 50 integrations. Maybe connect EVERY app your company uses with EVERY OTHER APP! Vibe coding has made software integrations absolutely trivial. Time to cash in! image

Obviously, this is all tongue-in-cheek, but software integrations have reached a price floor of less than a dollar, right when they are about to go extinct.

Now that moving data between systems is trivial, the question to ask might be "Why was I going to move this data in the first place?" - Were you moving data to and from a central database and a mobile friendly app? Skip it, you can just use an MCP server for field reporting. - Were you moving data to an app with better GUI for certain tasks? Skip it, you can just use an MCP server as your GUI. - Two departments use different apps on the same data? Maybe one of the two software products can be replaced with skills and an MCP server?

You see where we are going with this. AI Agents are going to take a big bite out of software, and especially software integrations. The data will live on, just on fewer apps.
